The Buffalo Bills have confirmed that Damar Hamlin is continuing to improve in hospital after collapsing on the field during Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The safety from Pennsylvania required CPR on the field after suffering from a cardiac arrest during the first quarter.

After ten minutes of CPR, medical staff were able to restart Hamlin’s heart after he had effectively died on the field. The 24-year-old needed CPR once again before arriving at the hospital and he has been in a critical condition ever since.

On Thursday morning, though, some good news came for those praying when the Buffalo Bills released a statement on Twitter that stated the following:

“Per the Physicians caring for Damar Hamlin at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Damar has shown remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours.

While still critically ill, he has demonstrated that he appears to be neurologically intact. His lungs continue to heal and he is making steady progress.

We are grateful for the love and support we have received.”

The statement from the Buffalo Bills comes after the NFL confirmed that the Bills’ game with the New England Patriots would go ahead as planned this Sunday. With the Bills still in contention for the number 1 seed and the Patriots needing a win to reach the offseason, it looks set to be an emotional and important game of football.

Neurologically Intact

The confirmation that Hamlin is not only showing signs of recovery but that he is neurologically intact is said to be of the most importance to those closest to him. Yesterday, there had been reports that Hamlin had been gripping the hands of those with him in the hospital yesterday, a sign doctors said was neurologically positive.

NFL Network Reporter, Cameron Wolfe, has been in touch with Hamlin’s family and he confirmed that they are delighted by the news that the 24-year-old is neurologically intact. He said:

“Everybody is extremely happy, they just received news this morning from the doctors that he’s neurologically intact.”

Earlier today, One of Hamlin’s Buffalo Bills teammates, Kaiir Elam, posted on Twitter to say that Hamlin had woken up. He said:

“Our boy is doing better, awake, and showing more signs of improvement. Thank you God. Keep the prayers coming please.”

Despite the positive news coming out of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, officials are keen to stress that his condition still remains critical and that the road to recovery will be a long one.

One Hero That Should Be Recognized

When Hamlin collapsed on Monday night, the speed with which medical staff reacted was the difference between the 24-year-old having a chance of survival and not.

Senior NFL Reporter, Albert Breer, has been commenting on the role that Buffalo Bills Assistant Athletic Trainer, Denny Kellington, played in reviving Hamlin. He tweeted:

“One hero who should be recognized here: Last night, I was told the work of Bill’s assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington in administering CPR to Damar Hamlin on Monday was absolutely vital.

The speed and skill with which he and others reacted = A huge difference-maker.”

Since the incident, Hamlin’s charity, The Chasing M’s Foundation Community Toy Drive which looks to provide underprivileged children in his community with toys and happiness has received unprecedented numbers. The target for donation prior to Hamlin’s collapse was $2500 but it has now reached over $7m.
