He Wants to Propose on a Lavish Romantic Getaway But She Prefers Modest Things. Is an Expensive Grand Gesture Too Much?

A travel forum user (25M) has a dilemma. He wants to propose to his girlfriend (26F) and wants to make a grand gesture in doing so. He is considering taking her on a trip somewhere and surprising her with an engagement ring while they’re away. It seems like a lovely idea, so why is he so hesitant to do it? Let’s find out.

The Best Way to Propose?

The original poster (OP) explains that both he and his girlfriend love traveling. However, the difference between the pair is that he likes going on lavish and expensive trips abroad, while she prefers more budget trips.

He earns more money than her, so he has no issue with paying for these lavish trips, but his girlfriend always feels bad about the fact that he has to pay for her as well because it would take too long for her to save up.

A Lavish Trip Away

OP says that he wants to pay for a lavish trip away from them and propose, but he can’t figure out a way to do it without a) her feeling guilty about it and b) telling her the reason why they are going away. He knows that his girlfriend would feel like she needed to get something for him in return, but he absolutely doesn’t want that.

He has his heart set on proposing this way and doesn’t want to do it anywhere “ordinary” because he believes/hopes that it will be the only time in his life that he gets to do it. He just doesn’t know how to do it without her feeling bad about him funding the trip.

Should he forget about the trip and propose in a way that will make her feel more comfortable or whisk her away without a second thought? Let’s take a look at what the Reddit community had to say.

The Best Advice

On the whole, the travel forum Community thought it was a nice idea, but that OP should perhaps consider his girlfriend’s feelings on the situation more. If she wouldn’t feel comfortable on an extravagant holiday, it probably isn’t the type of proposal she would be after.

It’s A Tough One

One person said: “It’s a tough one. She’s already said she’d feel like she’ll owe you if you did a nice holiday, let alone a beautiful ring! The difficult thing is that it’s uncommon for people that feel this way to get over it in decades, let alone hours.”

How To Get Around The Issue?

Other community members offered OP some advice on how he could get around the issue and get his girlfriend on board with the idea. On person suggested:

“Is there another reason you can suggest the trip? Say that you would love to surprise her with a trip for your six-month anniversary. Tell her the dates and what she should pack for and then it is a surprise when you get to the airport. Some would love that.”

What Do You Think?

What do you think? Should OP go through with his plans or tone them down a bit and propose in a different way? Let us know in the comments.
