In the social media world, we now live in, travelers are very quick to post their adventures on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. When you come across these accounts, you can be left scratching your head, wondering how these people afford to travel so often. Is it money from their parents, or do they have a get-rich-quick scheme worth knowing about?

Travel-mad travelers have recently been revealing their affordability secrets, and we’ve compiled their eight best methods. Prepare to be blown away!

1. Credit cards

One of the most popular responses came from someone open about using credit cards to pay for most of their trips abroad. They said: “I went 7k in debt on my credit card for a 4-month trip in 2019. No regrets. I paid it all back quickly enough.”

2. Getting a job with a good work/life balance

While some people’s careers mean working non-stop, others are more flexible when balancing work and social commitments. One person said: “I work for the Federal Government. I will never be rich working for the gov, but the work-life balance and decent salary occasionally allow me to travel overseas.”

3. Living in a country with a generous holiday allowance

Some countries are very harsh with their holiday allowance, while others give workers a fair deal. One user said: “Here in Germany, for example, six weeks paid holiday per year plus around 15 paid public holidays is fairly standard. In the US, many have only two weeks of paid holiday per year, so already there is a huge difference.”

4. Accessibility

Another valid point made was by someone who said that it’s easier and cheaper to travel to certain places depending on where you live. They said: “If you live in Europe, it’s easy/cheap to take a bus wherever you want to go for a few days, compared to several hundred dollars in the US to get over here.

5. Relentless saving

One person said they managed to afford trips abroad through severe and strict savings. They said: “Plenty have debt, and plenty has wealthy parents; I had neither and still managed to save up; you just have to put the work in, I’m afraid.”

6. Sharing the costs with a partner

One Redditor said that traveling became much easier for them once they found a partner who also wanted to travel. They explained, “What traveling I can do because I have a partner to split bills with, and we both try not to spend too much money on random things so we can save it all for trips.”

7. Booking at the right time

One user said their secret was all to do with when they booked their trips. They said: “When I’m looking to go away, I make sure that I buy and book well in advance or on big sale days. Traveling during off-peak times also helps.

8. Picking accommodation carefully

One person said that the key is all to do with sacrificing luxury when booking your accommodation. They said: “If you are willing to be uncomfortable and live with simple accommodations, traveling can be cheap.”

9. Getting A Side Hustle

Another common way people earn more money for travel is to get a side hustle. Side hustles can generate over six figures per year if you do it correctly. There are many different side hustles that generate income, such as starting a blog, investing in the stock market, and even playing games for money.
